자기소개서(ESSAY)
Essay란 학생이 SAT/TOEFL 등 시험점수에서 나타낼 수 없는 자신의 철학, 삶의 관점 등을 표현하여 자신의 정체성을 지원 대학에 부각시키는 것이다.
Essay를 쓸 때 가장 중요한 점은 자신의 색을 충분히 반영해 지원대학 입학 담당관이 봤을 때 당신을 뽑지 않으면 후회할 수 있겠다라는 생각을 갖게 하는 것이다. Essay의 중요성이 날로 높아지고 있다.
작성 시 유의사항
1. 평범한 주제는 피하라.
2. 미국과 한국 사이를 오가는 사회적 이슈를 다룬 주제는 삼가 하도록 한다.
3. 모방은 금물! 자신의 주관적 생각을 펼쳐라.
4. 원서에 쓴 내용은 반복하지 않도록 한다.
5. 이해하기 쉬운 글을 써라.
6. 부사와 형용사를 너무 많이 사용하지 않도록 한다.
7. 접속사로 문장을 시작하는 일을 최대한 피하라.
8. 원서 제출 전 담당 컨설턴트 또는 어학원 강사에게 에세이를 검토 받도록 한다.

LETTER OF SELF INTRODUCTION

Thank you giving me a chance to introduce myself. I am a creative mind and named O O O.
I was born in Naju on January 31, 1992. I am the graduating class from Sangmun high school. I would like to apply for journalism and Mass Communication Study. I was brought up with utmost card and affection by my family that father who is diligent, my mother who is always kind and my young brother who has a strong sense of responsibility. It helped me to gain confidence and independence in my life.
The reason for applying in journalism and Mass Communication Study is that I want to study some special major that other people never took. I love to meet people through Internet and desire to know that they think(desire, demand), induce me choice for the major.
In person, I have studied many subjects about new media-related such as New Media Policy, International Promotion, Image Communication, Organization Communication and Telecommunication and so on. The most interesting subject to me is New Media subject, which induce me to take some more subject about it. Furthermore, I studied English and Chinese because I thought that knowing many languages is power nowadays.
I am fluent with managing personal computer( Internet, Microsoft Office applications, Visual Basic, website-making-related application, server management and DB applications as well.
During my English study tour life in Philippine, I attempted to get all advantages in studying abroad as far as I could. For example, I was always eager to make friends in order not only to study their culture and thought but also to have good relationship.
While I was receiving a scholarship and experiencing the president of my school for three years, I paid careful attention to my attitude of mind. And that led me to good leadership. I think concerning other people is the most important thing in human relations. I'm a good listener rather than a comedian. I'm quite afraid of strangers. I would love to go to 000 University to pursue my dream. Thank you very much for reading my letter.
추천서
추천서는 지원자의 학업능력에 대해 성적이나 시험점수에 표시되지 않은 부분을 교사나 교수에게 평가해 달라는 것이며, 더욱 중요한 부분은 학생의 학업적 장점이 구체적으로 무엇이며, 또한 취약한 부분이 정확이 무엇인지를 묻고 있는 것이다.

대개 추천이란 단어의 사전상의 의미는 칭찬과 격려의 의미이나, 여기서의 뜻은 지원자의 장점과 약점을 정확히 평가(evaluation) 기술하여 달라는 의미이기도 하다.
이런 점에서 추천제도가 낯선 우리나라의 경우, 추천을 받는 지원자나 추천을 해주는 사람이나 때로 곤혹스런 상황을 겪게 되는데, 단점 없는 장점은 없다는 견지에서, 칭찬 일변도의 추천서는 생각 해보아야 할 요소다. 수치상의 표현은 어렵지만 꼭 표현한다면 칭찬 80%, 취약한 부분 20% 정도 표현이 Reasonable한 추천서로 채택될 가능성이 높다고 봐야 한다.
대부분의 명문 대학들은 보통 3~4부의 추천서를 요구한다. 추천인은 주로 대학에서 지정해주며 주로 자연계 교사/교수, 인문계 교사/교수, 학교 카운슬러(지도교사)로부터 받을 것을 권유한다.

Community Service
미 명문대에서 공부할 수 있는 Privilege를 사회의 소외된 계층과 더불어 나눌 수 있는 지식인의 모습을 지닌, 사회지도층의 역할과 책임을 다하는 인재상을 요구하므로 Habitat for Humanity Project등과 같은 사회봉사활동의 참여를 적극 생활화하여야 함.
Internships & Work
지원자의 삶을 바라보는 시각과 열정, 향후 대학교육을 마친 뒤, 대학의 동문으로서 모교와 나아가서는 사회에 어떤 Legacy를 남길 수 있는 인재상을 검증할 수 있는 분야
Extracurricular Activities
다양한 학교활동 과 적극적 학생상을 보여 줄 수 있는 분야로 Leadership, 독창성, Social Skills등을 통해 적극적이고 열정적인 끊임없이 노력하는 학생상을 보여 주어야 함.

건전한 육체에 건전한 정신이란 말처럼, 단순히 운동능력을 보는 것이 아니라, 미국사회에서 팀이란 조직에 속에서 구성원으로서의 역할과 협력, 협동, 지도력을 습득해 가는 과정을 보여 줄 수 있는 과정
Summer Activities
많은 학교들이 Summer experiences 가 대학생활, 사회생활의 성공과 연관된다고 고려하기에 지원자의 여름방학, 즉 자유로운 선택의 시간이 주어진 경우의, 학생의 선택과 경험을 인재상에 반영함.
